“Sneakers With Soul” was spearheaded by Manchester United Methodist Church with these partners: The Gathering UMC, Kirkwood UMC, Living Word UMC and Salem in Ladue UMC. The initial celebration was held at Kingdom House where clients and community kids received sneakers, backpacks and school supplies to get the ready to return to school. There was a carnival atmosphere. Members of Living Word United Methodist Church did the set up and members from Manchester United Methodist, dressed in the blue t-shirts did the distribution. All of the churches collected items that were distributed.

Morning Star United Methodist Church is one of the fastest growing churches in the Missouri Conference.  One among many reasons for this growth is that of using the most current media available to make the gospel come alive for their members.  With permission MissionCast is sharing one of videos that UMTV (United Methodist Communications) recently posted about how Morning Star UMC gives members the opportunity to text questions to their pastor, Rev. Mike Schreiner, during the worship service.

Their “Hope Epidemic” t-shirts read “The Church Has Left the Building.”  More than 1000 persons turned out for a free breakfast at First United Methodist Church in Sikeston.  After breakfast they spread out through their community to spread the hope and love of Christ.  In addition to doing a lot of flood related work, volunteers did such services as cleaning a burned out lot, sprucing up vacant lots, hanging teacher appreciation banners and praying at schools, handing out quarters and helping with laundry at local Laundromats, cleaning a historic cemetery, talking and playing games with nursing home residents, remodeling rooms at the shelter for abused women, and more.  A group of children sang at each nursing home in town, with many of the residents singing along and doing the hand motions with children.  Teams delivered cookie trays to public officials such as emergency medical technicians, the department of public safety, the Nations Guardsmen who were in town doing flood work.  People were even fed, cared for and even received hair and beauty appointments in the church.

The day truly helped change people’s ideas about church….from something that happens in that building across town to “the church was everywhere we looked.”  People in the community experienced the hope and love of Christ spread throughout their community.

Athletes

You may have missed a chance of a lifetime if you were not there at Sunrise United Methodist Church.  Indeed there were people standing, sitting and lying down in line as early as 5am for the church doors to open at 10am.  About 30 athletes from the metropolitan area drove to Sunrise United Methodist Church to give autographs in exchange for donations for our United Methodist Disaster Response ministry in Joplin and all across Missouri.  The main organizer of the event was associate pastor, Troy Merseal.

Admission was $20 for adults and $10 for youth and children.  For the admission fee you could get over 25 autographs of area athletes.  There was an extra ten dollar charge for certain celebrity autographs like those of the Cardinal’s Matt Holiday, Adam Wainwright and Skip Shumaker.  At one point the autographs for these athletes went up to $50 a piece.  People brought in pictures, baseball cards, helmets, bats, gloves, shirts, mascots and even little models of the players themselves.  Rev Jim Blue estimated that 90% of those making donations for disaster response were people from the community who were not attending Sunrise United Methodist Church.  Or might we hopefully say not attending as yet.

Room at the Inn

First United Methodist Church of Webster Groves offers hospitality to homeless women and children by transforming their fellowship hall into a “room at the inn.”  They do this in connection with a number of other area churches.  The ministry involves about 25 volunteers each time they open up their shelter.  In this MissionCast their Room at the Inn coordinator, Joan Bell, shares what all is involved for a congregation  to be involved in the ministry and what the ministry means to their congregation.
