After an active appointive ministry, retired District Superintendent, Rev. Robert McCombs, now has more time for carpentry. Bob, who has enjoyed woodworking all of his life, is devoting some of his time in retirement to making PETs. This episode of MissionCast shows Bob in his workshop with the PET pieces that he has produced. Mel West ,the founder of the PET program, is also featured in this episode.
PET stands for personal energy transportation. A PET is a three wheel, hand-cranked vehicle for those who have lost the use of their legs. PETs are built entirely by volunteers like Bob. The cost of building and shipping a PET is $250.

MissionCast taped this episode at General Conference in Fort Worth, Texas. Bishop Hopkins interviewed 7-year-old, Katherine Commale on the floor of the conference. At the 2007 Missouri Annual Conference, the Office of Creative Ministries got the Nothing But Nets campaign going in Missouri, by showing a Nothing But Nets video in which six-year-old Katherine was interviewed for raising $10,000 for the cause. This MissionCast starts with that interview and then moves to General Conference where Katherine, one year later, has raised substantially more. The Missouri Conference has raised over $130,000 for Nothing But Nets to date. Contributions toward this program seeking to eradicate malaria may be made through your local church and sent to the Missouri Conference Treasurer’s Office.

Over 6,000 people gathered at the convention center in Fort Worth, Texas for the opening worship service of the 2008 General Conference of the United Methodist Church. This MissionCast was produced after the first two days of conference and shows the convention hall, exhibits, worship highlights and ends with comments about the first ever young people’s address by our two Missouri Conference young adult delegates, Casey Andrews and Shannon Meister.

Any woman, regardless of age, class, education, religion, economic status or lifestyle is a potential victim of domestic violence. The mission of NEWHOUSE is to break the cycle of domestic violence by providing the tools that allow women to make positive choices and lead self-sufficient lives. Newhouse has been providing services to the “urban core” of Kansas City since 1971. In 2006, Newhouse served over 600 women and children, providing more than 17,000 nights free from violence. The typical Newhouse client comes from the lowest economic region of Kansas City, has no income and merely a high school education. PET of Southwest Missouri is located near Aurora. We interviewed Jim Wrinkle, the president, to learn about this PET production site. Interest in PET began several years ago when Jim’s Sunday School Class, at the Aurora United Methodist Church, raised money for three PETs. They wanted to do more and they did. Year before last they produced 100 PETs. Last year they built and shipped 150 and this year their goal is to exceed 500 PETs. MissionCast, episode 60, will show and tell how they are rapidly growing and involving more and more churches and people in their new mobility ministry. The day we taped this MissionCast most of the volunteer builders were from the Catholic Church, in Aurora. All of this means of course that more and more people are receiving what most of us take for granted which is the Gift of Mobility. Gulfside Assembly, in Waveland, Mississippi was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. We asked Jerry Ruth Williams to share some of her experience of Gulfside. She grew up attending camp and more recently meetings at Gulfside. Infact the last time she was there was just two weeks before Katrina. She was there for the dedication of an new retreat center that was blown away two weeks later. Gulfside Assembly is one of those vital ministries that is no longer listed on the financial request form that goes to church treasurers. Jerry Ruth urges our continued support. One of the very best international Volunteers in Mission opportunities available is Operation Hogar. It is wonderful because in four days the team builds a home from beginning to completion and the family that will be living in the home works along with the team. Nance Thuer, who serves as the major project leader for the Office of Creative Ministries for Operation Hogar will be leading a team of persons who wish to experience Operation Hogar in preparation for leading a future team to Operation Hogar. The Office of Creative Ministries will pay $300 of the $750 cost of the trip for those who wish to apply to serve as a conference VIM team leader and then recruit and lead a team to build a home. Operation Hogar is located in Juarez, Mexico just across the boarder from El Paso, Texas. Nance’s team will leave on Saturday, October 11 and will return on Friday, October 17. For 35 years the Neosho United Methodist Men (with the help of the entire church) have been serving potato soup with the proceeds going to feed hungry people through the Society of St. Andrew. They have calculated that they are able to provide 150 servings of food for every $3.50 bowl of soup they sell. Through the years their efforts have expanded from an in-church benefit to one where they deliver soup to businesses all over the town of Neosho. MissionCast was present for their recent Potato Soup Benefit. The men of the church have produced a CD with complete detailed instructions for planning a potato soup benefit. Dorothy Brucks, produced this video, which took third place in the MissionCast video contest. The video tells about the Aldergate UMC Volunteers in Mssion trip to Juarez, Mexico where they built a one room concrete block home for a family previously living in a cardboard shack. Click on the picture to the left to see the video.
If you have produced a video on some mission program or activity in your church please send it in so we can show your stuff too. The only restriction is that it must not violate any copyright laws in order for us to be able to post it on the Internet. Oh yes, the maximum length is 2 1/2 minutes. However, with your permission we are able often to edit down a longer piece to the needed length.
