141. MissionCast – Backpack Snacks – Grace UMC, Sullivan, Missouri

Filling Backpack SnackSecond grade teacher, Michelle Rhoads,  is interviewed in this MissionCast video as she tells about the importance of the backpack snacks outreach program of the Grace United Methodist Church.

Many school-aged children get breakfast and lunch at school during the school year.  About half of Sullivan, Missouri’s school children qualify for free or reduced lunches. Over the weekends, however, many children do not have access to food.  The Grace United Methodist Congregation is filling this gap by providing “backpack snacks.”  The backpacks contain healthy, nutritious snacks for these children to take home each weekend. Items in the backpacks include things like shelf-stable milk, pasta bowls, fruit juice, applesauce, peanut butter, mac and cheese, and granola bars.

We are so very appreciative of the Grace media team and their pastor Steve Williams for making this video and giving us permission to use it for a MissionCast.

138. MissionCast – Festival of Sharing

For MissionCast, click the picture or one of the links below to view or download the video.

Festival of Sharing

The Festival of Sharing is all about people like Beatrice pictured to the right.  You could have heard a pin drop from where I was taping while Beatrice, now grown, told the 400 youth present at the Festival of Sharing Youthfest, about her life.  Twenty minutes of thoughful questions followed.  Beatrice lives in Uganda, Africa.  Her family could not afford to send the children to school.  It all changed when the family received the gift of a Heifer International goat.  With the income from that one goat Beatrice and her brothers and sisters were able to attend school.  She is not doing graduate studies in the United States.
The Festival of Sharing is all about making a difference in the lives of people in need here in Missouri, across our country and around the world.  It is an amazing spirit filled event which involves thousands of people making gifts for the poor through the year and bringing them to the Sedalia or one of the many Festival of Sharing sites around the state.  And it involves hundreds of volunteers on the actual days when each event is held.  This MissionCast shows a little of what happened in Sedalia.  Mark Saturday, October 16, 2010, on your calandar to attend again next year.

DVDs of Beatrice’s full presentation to the youth and the thoughtful questions they asked will be available from the Office of Creative Ministries.  Just email Dora at thackery@umocm.com

135. MissionCast – Christ Community UMC Community Garden and Food Pantry

Christ Community

Christ Community United Methodist Church, in the heart of St. Louis, is reaching out to their community by providing garden plots for individuals to grow food for themselves and by providing food through their emergency food pantry.  They also use their community garden for growing food for distribution through their food pantry.  A growing number of churches in the Missouri Conference are turning to this kind of green outreach ministry using portions of their church lawn to feed people rather than simply growing grass.  If your congregation is doing this we would like to hear about it.  Let us know by adding a comment at the bottom of this MissionCast page.

You can read about the Christ Community United Methodist Church garden ministry in the August 7, 2009 issue of the Review, which is the Missouri Conference Newspaper.   You can go to the electronic edition of the Review by clicking the link below.

117. Food for Body and Soul – Union Memorial UMC

Garden

If you have worshiped at Union Memorial United Methodist Church, in St. Louis, you know that their community is offered “passionate worship”  Currently the congregation is also offering “radical hospitality” to their community.  They have installed the lastest media equipment with screens in the sanctuary.  They are working on the church facilities to make them completely accessible and friendly.  And they are reaching out to the community in many ways including serving lunch four days a week and a huge breakfast on Sunday mornings.  That is where the garden comes in.  Like a few other churches in Missouri that have yards they are using them to grow food for the hungry.  The produce from the garden is used in their feeding program.  A second garden is planted for anyone from the community wanting fresh greens to come and pick as much as they want.  MissionCast brings this story of radical hospitality.
