MissionCast – Nursing Scholarships – Alternative Christmas Gift

For $20 a week or $85 a month enable a student from a very poor Christian home to attend nursing school at the Ludhiana Christian Medical College, in India.  We ran this MissionCast last year and raised the support for 11 nursing students.  Now we are looking to raise the support for them for another year.  Either send your contribution to the Office of Creative Ministries, 3009 David Dr., Columbia, MO  65202 or contribute online.  If you contribute online through the General Board of Global Ministries Advance Special program you can make this an alternative Christmas gift for someone special and even print out a card at the end.  Also your local church can received credit for your gift if you wish.  It is easy.  Just go to http://gbgm-umc.org, click on “Give Now” and follow the directions.  To watch a video that we prepared to guide you through the process click the picture to the right.

Last Christmas Rich gave Carol an alternative Christmas gift.  It was a pig purchased through Heifer International.  That pig has given Carol (and Rich) joy the whole year.  The pig has made it possible for an impoverished family somewhere in the world to improve their life by providing them with extra income to do things like send their children to school, improve their home and provide them with a better diet.  AND this impoverished family was able to become a significant “giver” when it passed on the gift by giving the first offspring from their pig to another impoverished family. “Passing on the gift” is an important part of the Heifer International program. Can you guess what Rich is going to give Carol for Christmas this year?  Perhaps not another pig but maybe a flock of chicken…sheep…goats…bees…or maybe even a water buffalo or camel.  For more information call the Office of Creative Ministries and talk to Carol Oliver.  Phone 573-474-7155  Email:  oliver@umocm.com

200. Little Bethlehem – Fairview UMC

Little BethlehemFairview United Methodist Church, in Columbia, reaches out to their community by building an elaborate set for Little Bethlehem.  Shepherds guide members of the community through Bethlehem as church members in costume relate the events of Christmas Eve.  Following the journey through Bethlehem visitors are warmed up with refreshments and caroling inside the church.  Upon leaving visitors sign the guess book and receive a Christmas tree ornament.  Later in the year they receive invitations to other special events in the life of the church.

195. MissionCast – Shop at the Global Market – Community UMC – Columbia

The Christmas shopping season has begun.  Community United Methodist Church makes it easy for their members, those living in and around Columbia and those traveling to Columbia for meetings and other activities.  For about ten years a part of their outreach ministry, which benefits poor artisans in countries around the world, has been a year around Global Market Store right in their church.  Purchases made in the store go directly to the artisans without a number of middle profiteers in between.  The program insures good wages for the artisans.  MissionCast had the good fortune of interviewing Ava Swofford who has been with the ministry since it began.  For information about starting such a ministry in your church call Community UMC at 573-445-6131.

46. Little Bethlehem – Fairview United Methodist Church

Little BethlehemEvery year Fairview United Methodist Church, in Columbia, reaches out to the community with the story of the birth of Jesus.  After building an elaborate outside set they reenact the Christmas story for hundreds of people who bear the cold to once again visit Bethlehem.  We are grateful to Wesley & Nick Campbell for producing MissionCast this week, as the first entry in the MissionCast video contest.  To View MisionCast click on the picture or on one of the links below
