151. Stories From Returning Haiti Volunteers

Giving Online

Volunteers serving in Haiti at the time of the earthquake share their memories in the UMTV (United Methodist Communications) video that we are using with their permission.

There will be a great need for volunteers to help rebuild in Haiti once the initial crisis has settled. At this time, it is not safe or possible for volunteers to go. The country is in crisis with severe lack of fuel, food and water. There are significant transportation and security challenges. The General Board of Global Ministries will be working with the Methodist Church of Haiti and other organizations in providing medical and other services. If you want to volunteer to go to Haiti when the opportunity becomes available, go to www.umocm.com and fill out the survey for volunteers.

If you have specific questions please call or email Audrey Phelps at the Office of Creative Ministries.  Phone 573-474-7155  Email: phelps@umocm.com

150. MissionCast – Haiti Earthquake Appeal

Giving Online

This has been a week of immense tragedy.  The earthquake that toppled buildings in Haiti has taken over a hundred thousand lives.  Hundreds of thousands more have been left homeless.  Sam Dixon, the Director of our United Committee on Relief was one of those who lost his life.  Clint Rabb with whom I traveled on the first Missouri Conference leadership team to Mozambique was rescued but then died in a Florida hospital.  This word came to us after the MissionCast was taped.  Untold thousands are desperately in need of food, water, medical attention, housing and supplies.  We in Missouri are responding with gifts of our financial resources through our UMCOR Advance Special #418325 and through assembling Festival of Sharing Health Kits, Baby Bundles and IMA Medicine Boxes.  Keep scrolling down for the contents of the kits and drop-off points around the state.

146. Chapel Woods UMC – Matthew 28 Ministry

fred & irene price After Katrina, when it was appropriate to do so, Jeff Brinkman, Senior pastor at Woods Chapel United Methodist Church, in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, took his congregation to New Orleans to become a part of the recovery ministry.  The amazing thing is that they never left.  All these years later they are still there.  Jeff saw a need and the congregation responsed by sending a constant stream of volunteers in mission couples to assist VIM teams flowing in from all over the country.  While shooting a MissionCast about Hope United Methodist Church, from Lone Jack, Missouri, serving in New Orleans, we stumbled upon Fred and Irene Price, Matthew 28 ministry volunteers from Woods Chapel United Methodist Church.  In this MissionCast we hear first hand about this amazing Matthew 28 ministry.

142. MissionCast – Rebuilding New Orleans – Outward Focused Hope UMC

New OrleansMissionCast caught up with Rev. John Payne, and members of Hope United Methodist Church in New Orleans.  Hope UMC in Lone Jack, Missouri is an outward focused congregation that reaches out in mission in many ways.  On this particular ocasion they were down in New Orleans putting the finishing touches on Debra Simmon’s home.  It has been 4 long years since Debra was in her home and she was so very appreciative to Hope for giving her hope.

Tasha Stephens, their team leader, wants us to know that there still is a lot of work to be done in New Orleans.  If your congregation would like information about reaching out like this contact Audrey Phelps at the Office of Creative Ministries.  (phelps@umocm.com or 573-474-7155)

113. Spring Break Louisiana – Community UMC, Columbia

Spring Break

University of Missouri students from Community United Methodist Church, in Columbia, Missouri, served in New Orleans over spring break.  They worked on homes that were destroyed years ago by hurricane Katrina.  MissionCast caught up with three of the students at Community to listen to their experience.  Thank you to Liz Hinz, Sami Owen and Ben Rackets for sharing with us.  Tammy Shelton from Community also served on the team as one of the team leaders.  They report that it is estimated that mission teams will be needed for the next 18 years to complete the cases that are still open and are needing attention.
If you are interested in serving in this way contact Audrey Phelps, at the Office of Creative Ministries.  (phelps@umocm.com / 573-474-7155)
Thanks to the many Missouri college students that we learned about on facebook, and from whom we requested permission to use their pictures, who also spent spring break on this project that was planned by Beverly Boehmer and the Missouri Collection Connection.
