301. 2nd Saturday SERVE – Community UMC

Haiti

Community United Methodist Church which has participated in SERVE 2011 and SERVE 2012 decided not to wait until SERVE 2013. They decided to SERVE on the 2nd Saturday of every month. Your MissionCast crew found them busy serving on Saturday and followed them around their community. The volunteers serve in projects that are completed by noon.

298. A Kennett Christmas for All

Haiti

On Saturday, at First United Methodist Church, in Kennett, Christmas was all about the other person. The bulletin cover on Sunday morning reflected that sentiment. They opened their doors to over 1800 persons who had registered for their Annual Christmas Party. For one day the church was converted into a shopping mall. Part of the church became a huge toy store. There were tables piled high with toys for boys or girls in every age group where preregistered parents could pick out one toy for each of their children. The tables were completely restocked throughout the day. The amazing thing to the parents was that there was no cash register. The children of parents were escorted by a whole cadre of youth volunteers to rooms to select presents for moms and dads. The gifts selected they lined up at the gift wrapping section of the church. While families waited for their turn to shop there were hot dogs and other goodies along with various party activities to add to the joy of the event.

289. MissionCast – Furnishing Hope at The Word at Shaw UMC

Haiti

“They have never been treated with such dignity…” Keith Scarborough, pastor of The Word at Shaw United Methodist Church, in St. Louis, was speaking to us about the homeless women who come to his church looking for furniture with which to furnish their apartments. The women receive more than furniture….they receive hope. Thus this new ministry, coordinate by Joleen Mayfield, at the Word at Shaw is called “Furnishing Hope.” It is a partnership ministry with the Shalom House and Green Trails UMC along with some help from other area churches. The ministry is for women who have completed the course at Shalom House and are ready to graduate to an apartment of their own. Picking out furnishing at The Word at Shaw is like going to Dillard’s or Ikea.

284. MissionCast – How To Become A Legacy Church – King Hill UMC

Haiti

King Hill United Methodist Church in St. Joseph had a thriving ministry but for the past twenty years has been losing members and financial resources. After reading the book “Legacy Churches” the congregation voted to close their doors and celebrate their rich and fruitful ministry while they still had a choice in the matter. Around 160 persons attended their closing celebration service. This MissionCast shares the reflections of two of their members and their pastor who feel good about the process they used.

283. MissionCast – Community Outreach Dinners – Unionville UMC

Haiti

Unionville UMC serves free dinners for the community every Monday evening. The outreach ministry has grown to where the fellowship hall fills up as people come, eat and go letting others come. The community fellowship around the tables is great. Dinners are even taken to the homes of those who cannot come to the church including inmates in the county jail. The ministry grew out of a group of women in the church who meet regularly for prayer and spiritual growth.
