192. MissionCast – VIM to Haiti – Nora Jones, Team Leader

VIM Haiti

Rev. Dr. Nora Jones, pastor of Samaritan United Methodist Church, in St. Louis led the first Missouri Conference Earthquake response VIM team to Haiti.  Her team served on compound of the Methodist Church and School in Millier, which was located at the epicenter of the earthquake.  MissionCast interviewed Nora at Samaritan UMC where she told about her VIM team’s experience.

If you would like to join or lead a VIM team to Haiti just call the Office of Creative Ministries as speak with Audrey Phelps.  (Phone: 573-474-7155 / Email: phelps@umocm.com)  Our teams serve at the direction of the staff of UMCOR and the Methodist Church in Haiti.  We anticipate that many VIM teams from Missouri will be needed to help rebuilt Haiti over the next ten years.  You may also help financially by sending your contributions through your church using the designation:  UMCOR Haiti Relief #418325.  Or you may contribute on line at gbgm-umc.org/umcor

181. MissionCast – Rain of Compassion – UMCOR – Pakistan Flood

Pakistan Flood

UMCOR (the United Methodist Committee on Relief) is calling for a “rain of compassion.” Worse than the earthquake in Haiti and Chile and the tsunami combined, the flooding in Pakistan is displacing millions of people. Whole villages have been washed away. The immediate need is for food, medical services and temporary shelter. There long-term recovery needs are staggering. The United Methodist Committee on Relief is working through its partners in Pakistan to bring immediate relief. We can all help by receiving special offerings and making individual gifts to the UMCOR Advance #982450 – Pakistan Flood. As always 100% of the gift goes directly to respond to the needs of individuals and families in Pakistan. All administrative costs are taken from other funds. Send your gifts to the Missouri Conference, 3601 Amron Court, Columbia, MO 65202.

UMCOR

On Sunday, March 22nd, United Methodist congregations across the country will receive the One Great Hour of Sharing Offering which supports the work of the United Methodist Committee on Relief. Missouri has suffered more natural disasters in the past three years than any other state.  Your Missouri United Methodist Disaster Response Team, headed by Karen Benson, our conference disaster response coordinator, and Jeff Baker, on the Office of Creative Ministries staff, has been hard at work. Our conference efforts have been consistently supported by U.M.C.O.R. or UMCOR as it is often called.  UMCOR is likely the best known acronym in the United Methodist Church.  Next to Wesley it may be the best known specifically “United Methodist” word.  It stands for United Methodist Committee on Relief. Every time a major disaster strikes Missouri, UMCOR issues, upon request of our bishop, a $10,000 emergency grant to help begin our recovery process.  When additional funds are needed UMCOR is there to supply our needs.  After hurricanes Katrina and Rita when thousands of survivors took up residence in Missouri, Bishop Schnase requested half a million dollars and it was received expeditiously.  At other times in recent years we have requested grants of $50,000 to aid relief efforts in Missouri like after the tornado that swept through Caruthersville.  UMCOR has never refused Missouri money in our times of need. One Great Hour of Sharing gives us an opportunity to insure that UMCOR is there to help Missouri and other areas of the United States and the world.  UMCOR, unlike most of our general church agencies, receives no support from apportionments.  UMCOR relies totally on the One Great Hour of Sharing Offering for its support.  Give the members of your congregation the opportunity to reach out through UMCOR by receiving the One Great Hour of Sharing offering on March 22nd.

1. One Great Hour of Sharing

katrina_ronald_grahamEach year the One Great Hour of Sharing offering enables the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) to bring hope to countless survivors of both natural and people-made diasters.  The 2007 One Great Hour of Sharing offering is scheduled for March 18.  However, you may receive the offering when it is best for your congregation.  Offering envelopes will be sent to you free from United Methodist Communications. This video shows some of the ways that Missouri has benefited from this offering.  It includes video clips of diaster response in Missouri and elswhere.  It also encludes an appeal from Wendy Whitside, who was once a staff member for the Office of Creative Ministries and now heads up communications for the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries, head quartered in New York.  The video is 2 minutes and 40 seconds long.  You may download this video and show it to your Outreach Committee or even show it on Sunday morning if your church has the capability to do so.  A DVD quality version may ordered from the Office of Creative Ministries for $3 which includes shipping and handling.
