196. MissionCast – West Plains Christian Free Clinic – First UMC, West Plains

Free ClinicOver 100 people in all walks of medical and non-medical life volunteer their time in the free clinic that was opened in West Plains, largely through the vision of Rev. 195. MissionCast – Shop at the Global Market – Community UMC – Columbia

The Christmas shopping season has begun.  Community United Methodist Church makes it easy for their members, those living in and around Columbia and those traveling to Columbia for meetings and other activities.  For about ten years a part of their outreach ministry, which benefits poor artisans in countries around the world, has been a year around Global Market Store right in their church.  Purchases made in the store go directly to the artisans without a number of middle profiteers in between.  The program insures good wages for the artisans.  MissionCast had the good fortune of interviewing Ava Swofford who has been with the ministry since it began.  For information about starting such a ministry in your church call Community UMC at 573-445-6131.

194. MissionCast – Ludhiana Christian College of Nursing Students Share

One of the ways we have supported the Ludhiana Christian Medical College is by providing scholarships for nursing students.  Recently two congregations, Webster Groves UMC in St. Louis and Missouri UMC in Columbia have asked for some pictures or videos of current nursing students to help in raising funds for scholarships.  The result is MissionCast #194.  Max Marble, Director of the Office of Creative Ministries, was able to interview some students in September while attending the Ludhiana Christian Medical College Board meeting.  This MissionCast is 3 minutes long.  However longer versions are available with fuller interviews.

Rija Elizabeth Zachariah (pictured) was one of the nursing students interviewed.  For a $40 Thanksgiving gift or part of a congregational Christmas personal offering educate a Ludhiana Christian College of Nursing student for a week.  Or educate him or her for a month for just $160.  A gift or contribution of $1800 will give them a whole year at the Christian College of Nursing.    Please considering making a contribution to help Rija and other needy students. 193. MissionCast – Organ & Tissue Donor Sunday

In order to promote Organ and Tissue Donor Sunday, MissionCast interviewed a kidney donor and the person who received a kidney from him. The transplant took place at the University of Missouri Hospital 10 years ago. Theirs is a wonderful story. James Stuart, a former employee and friend, offered Steven Moore a kidney after he had been on dialysis for a year and a half.

ORGAN AND TISSUE DONOR SUNDAY
(from the General Board of Global Ministries)

Organ and Tissue Donor Sunday, a United Methodist special Sunday observed as part of the National Donor Sabbath, is traditionally observed the second Sunday in November. The United Methodist Church supports organ and tissue donation:

We believe that organ transplantation and organ donation are acts of charity, agape love, and self-sacrifice. We recognize the life-giving benefits of organ and other tissue donation and encourage all people of faith to become organ and tissue donors as a part of their love and ministry to others in need. We urge that it be done in an environment of respect for deceased and living donors and for the benefit of the recipients, and following protocols that carefully prevent abuse to donors and their families.

About National Donor Sabbath

Faith communities throughout the country will observe National Donor Sabbath during the second weekend of November. National Donor Sabbath helps to increase awareness of the critical need for organs and tissues and the miracle of transplantation. Religious leaders who participate in discussions of donation with their congregants can affirm that choosing to be an organ and tissue donor offers the opportunity to share the greatest blessing of all– the gift of life.

This annual interfaith celebration of life stresses the importance of donation. Religious leaders who lead discussions of donation with their congregants affirm that choosing to be an organ and tissue donor offers the opportunity to share the greatest blessing of all — the gift of life.

As participation in National Donor Sabbath increases and more individuals become aware of donation, one message is repeated time and again: make a decision about being an organ and tissue donor, sign a donor card, indicate your wishes on your driver’s license, and tell your family. For a family who has lost a loved one and is considering donation, knowing the loved one’s wishes in advance helps provide assurance that the right decision is made.

192. MissionCast – VIM to Haiti – Nora Jones, Team Leader

Rev. Dr. Nora Jones, pastor of Samaritan United Methodist Church, in St. Louis led the first Missouri Conference Earthquake response VIM team to Haiti.  Her team served on compound of the Methodist Church and School in Millier, which was located at the epicenter of the earthquake.  MissionCast interviewed Nora at Samaritan UMC where she told about her VIM team’s experience.
